NUTRITION FOR FATTY LIVER

NUTRITION FOR FATTY LIVER

Obesity is well known as the biggest risk factor for most of diseases. Obesity cause multiple metabolic syndrome. Having excess body fat especially around the organ is dangerous. It is called as visceral fat. Fatty liver is common among obese people. Why is it so?

Medically, fatty liver is defined as accumulation of fat in the liver (WebMD,2017). The other name of fatty liver is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases (NAFLD). It is name as non-alcoholic because the excess fat is not from alcohol but fatty food or carbohydrate sources. So here we know that fatty liver can be cause by alcohol or not. Alcohol fatty liver Diseases (AFLD) is excess fat accumulate in the liver because alcohol abusive. NAFLD is now categorized into hepatic steatosis and non-alcohol steatohepatitis (NASH). Hepatic steatosis in another name is fatty liver. It is reversible since it doesn't induced inflammation whereas NASH leads to cirrhosis (Cooper,2009).

How alcohol cause excess fat? Calorie for alcohol is 7 kcal/gram. Near as much as fat with 9 kcal/gram. We all know that when we consume high fatty food and carbohydrates intake, our body will be store the excess as fat cells or adipocytes. There are some interesting facts about adipocytes. Adipocytes collect excess triglycerides and keep it for energy used later. Research has shown that fat cells would not be reduced when you lose weight. Instead of number of cells, changes in size can be seen when you lose weight.

Liver must metabolize, store, manufacture, and package fat into lipoproteins for delivery to body cells. Triglycerides can build up in hepatocytes if the liver's mitochondrial beta-oxidation and very-low-density lipoprotein production are insufficient to handle the fatty acid load.2 Over time, this fat accumulation can lead to scarring, inflammation, fibrosis, and cirrhosis-the progressive stages of NAFLD (Cooper,2009)

In brief, when you have more fat around your body or subcutaneous fat, there is still hope and chances to change by dietary lifestyle. However, once you have high visceral fat or fat surround your internal organ or even worse fatty liver, extra efforts are needed to see some changes.

Does cutting off fatty food, carbohydrates and alcohol will resolve fatty liver problem? Not necessarily. However, lifestyle modification is recommended as it will alter the bad dietary habit to a better one. Changing lifestyle is not easy as it says. It needs full commitment, efforts, motivation and support.

Nutritionally, for liver there are few foods need to be focused more such as carbohydrates and fat. As we all know, liver involved in fat and carbohydrates metabolism. Liver stores excess glucose in form of glycogen which later will be converted to glucose whenever needed by body. Liver also secretes bile which released by gall bladder for emulsifying fat in small intestines. Hence, these functions may be affected with presence of liver diseases such as NAFLD. It is important to look at these types of macronutrients because any other excess could lead to another problems. Instead of forbid from eating, its better to control the portion.

Usually, we all suggest prevention before management. Thus, it is better to get yourself check-up. Even obese people has higher linked to fatty liver, people with normal Body Mass Index (BMI) should not take for granted. Slim people also can develop high fat mass. But they may not seem like obese people because most of the fat accumulate around the organ which we know that is even more harmful.
