LET’S BE FIT, NOT SKINNY

People nowadays are obsessed to get thin. For them, thin is better especially among obese population. A comprehensive approach in letting them know the risks of being too thin has to be done. Usually, they have a perception that be thin is healthy. Whereas being thin is unlike of being healthy. People should aware that the real aim of staying healthy is be fit not skinny.

Having underweight based on Body Mass Index (BMI) is surely not something to be proud of. Who says that skinny is healthy? You must have heard this – skinny fat. Skinny fat is skinny people who has lots of fat in their body. Not subcutaneous fat but visceral fat – fat that surrounds the internal organs.

Here I list some health risk related to being thin or underweight:

  1. Decreased immune function
  2. Fertility issues due to irregular menstrual cycles
  3. Malnutrition; vitamin or mineral deficiencies
  4. Osteoporosis

However, it is more common among women compared to men. Breast cancer in men are rare but it is not impossible.
